Wordle captivated Twitter in early 2022, combining simplistic gameplay with viral sharing options to garner a massive player base within months of its release. While that massive popularity has faltered slightly, there are still a number of people guessing the Wordle puzzle each day. Whether it’s the dwindling cultural relevance or the fact that Wordle is running out of possible five-letter words to use, the word game’s lifespan likely won’t last forever, though. That’s where variations on the game’s design come into play.
Shortly after Wordle garnered national attention, clones began popping up on the internet. Most clones keep the basic principles of Wordle but change it slightly, such as Lewdle, which tasks players with guessing a vulgar five-letter word. Others, like Marvle, limit words to a specific theme. Some Wordle clones change the format entirely, like Moviedle, which has movie buffs watching a sped-up clip of a movie before guessing the day’s chosen film. The different examples give players more options after taking on Wordle’s daily puzzle.

The fun of the many Wordle clones is that there are many variations on the formula and players have to utilize different methods to uncover the puzzle’s answer or answers. In a game like Octordle, this may mean being more careful with each guess and picking words that will eliminate as many letters as possible early on. WeWordle‘s unique gameplay mechanics mean players shouldn’t rely on their original Wordle strategy. Since each guess shows up on both players’ screens, the hints are available for everyone to use, so being conscious about what a guess might reveal is essential for success. The timer also adds a particular challenge, since 20 seconds isn’t a lot of time to come up with a possible answer. This means players will have to stay on their toes, while simultaneously using the opponent’s clock to think up potential words.
There will likely continue to be variations on the Wordle formula. Interesting Wordle clones keep spawning, and that’s not a bad thing, especially since Wordle only offers one puzzle per day.
