The Australian Army has established a new Canberra-based Aviation Command responsible for its helicopters and unmanned aerial systems.
Major general Stephen Jobson, who will lead the new command, said the move would lead to better coordination of new helicopters and enhance oversight of the safety, effectiveness and sustainability of current aircraft.
“The changes to Army’s aviation command and control structure will simplify the management of Army’s helicopters—one of the most multifaceted and resource-intensive platforms used by the land forces,” Jobson said.
The move meant the 16th Aviation Brigade and the Army Aviation Training Centre transferred from Army Forces Command to Aviation Command last Thursday.
The event was marked with a ceremonial parade and helicopter flyover at Blamey Square in Canberra.
Lieutenant General Burr praised the formation of the new command as a significant achievement for the army and the Australian Defence Force.
“The unity, sense of purpose and focus in a single command will optimise army aviation and support our land forces to achieve more tasks, in a more difficult environment,” Lieutenant General Burr said.
He said the new command represented the delivery of a key milestone from the 2020 Defence Strategic Update and 2020 Force Structure Plan.
The army’s aircraft provide aviation reconnaissance, firepower support, air assault, and battlefield support and surveillance.
The aircraft include the tandem-rotor Boeing CH-47F Chinook, the four-blade Eurocopter Tiger armed reconnaissance helicopter, NH Industries MRH90 Taipan multi-role helicopter and leased civil light utility helicopter.
