(not pictured), back when the main highway was Route 81. McClung, an Indian Jones type character, got into the business with a traveling show featuring his three nieces—Betty, Irene and Lula Belle—with three large pythons, according to a relative. As traveling got tiresome, McClung timed the opening of the Snake Farm to catch the traffic off HemisFair ‘68.
While on tour in late 1970s Texas, the Ramones stumbled upon the off-beat roadside stop and incorporated Snake Farm t-shirts into their wardrobe. Replicas of the t-shirts worn by the late Dee Dee Ramone are available online.
Snake Farm lore from long ago tips that if you requested change for a $20, you would gain admission to a prostitute’s trailer in the back.
Outlaw country singer Ray Wylie Hubbard wrote a gritty earworm hit about a guy in love with a stripper working the Snake Farm counter: “Snake Farm, sure sounds nasty. Snake Farm, pretty much is. Ewwwwwww.”
When McClung died of a heart attack, his niece Betty and her husband Joe Teska inherited the business and grew it to include exotic, wild animals. Joe lost his thumb to a rattlesnake bite, and a bear attack at the cost him $30,000 in medical bills, he told the Express-News. After selling the Snake Farm to John Mellyn and his wife Susan, the Teskas moved to Louisiana.
For an episode of “Dirty Jobs” on the Discovery Channel, Mike Rowe traveled to Texas to feature the Snake Farm.

Dallas-based chiropractor and animal activist Eric Trager has been the current owner since he took over the business in 2007, with the intent of evolving the Snake Farm’s mission to serve as a refuge and fully accredited zoo.
Under Trager’s tenure, the Snake Farm has been re-branded as the Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo to include the vast collection of animals at the park, such as these adorable three mountain lion cubs.
There are currently more than 700 snakes at the Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo, according to Trager. The number continues to climb as people find snakes on their property and choose not to kill them, or purchase them as pets without realizing the extent of the responsibilities involved. Trager is actively building the snake collection.
Trager said he is working to amass the largest collection of rattlesnakes in the world. There are 92 sub-species of rattlers, and the Snake Farm has over 70 of them.
at the Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo. Four Asian small-clawed otters were born there in October 2015. And, baby jaguars will make their debut around Memorial Day weekend this year.
Long before he came to own the Snake Farm, Trager was involved in animal rescue efforts, which he continues today. Gus, the gator pictured here, was illegally caught by people kayaking near the Guadalupe River in Spring Branch. He was re-homed at the Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo.
A 20-foot reticulated python is the longest snake at the Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo. It weighs 200 pounds.
The world’s most venomous snake is the inland taipan, also known as the fierce snake, and there is one at the Animal World & Snake Farm Zoo.
When a pair of rare white lion cubs, named Motswari and Ngala, debuted at Animal World and Snake Farm in 2014, they were two of less than 300 white lions in the world.
The crocodile feeding is the most popular show at the Animal World and Snake Farm Zoo. Although the zoo has evolved in many ways — the old cages are no longer in use, for example — a number of interactive educational shows have been added to the day’s line-up. The croc feedings, however, continue to be the most talked-about attraction.
