Augmented reality has infiltrated seemingly every area of sport. Executives recognize its importance while marketing teams deploy it in different ways each day. With AR’s growing popularity, iOS recently introduced ARKit; a platform to aid in the development of AR apps.
One such app recently released by Triangle Factory is AR Sports Basketball. The game allows you to set up a hoop virtually (at your desk, a park, the grocery store, etc.) and start taking shots. There is a single player mode or you can challenge your friends to a game of H.O.R.S.E. thanks to a new update.

Open the app, walk around and select where you want to place the hoop. You can rotate the basket or make it smaller/larger depending on the area where you choose to play. Make it mini for your work desk or larger in an outdoor setting.
Hit multiple baskets in a row and you might find yourself shooting a flaming basketball.
There a few specific things about ARKit’s technology that make the app possible.
Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) is used to accurately detect how how the device moves within a room. A combination of camera sensor data and Core Motion data make extra calibration unnecessary in setting up the game.
ARKit also helps detect horizontal planes where the game can be played. Not only this, it will estimate the amount of light available in a scene. If there isn’t enough, ARKit will apply the correct amount of light to virtual objects.

Apollo Neuro became the first wearable partner of the NFL Alumni Association (NFLAA) through its deal announced in August that provided retired players, coaches, front office executives, spouses and cheerleaders with a discount to purchase the wearable device, which is sold for $399. SportTechie's Andrew Cohen spoke with former NFLAA CEO Beasley Reece about Apollo and the technology behind its stress-reducing effects.
SportTechie's Joe Lemire reports on the new Golfzon Range by Leadbetter in Little Ferry, New Jersey. The location provides year-round accommodations for cold-weather residents but also offers the technology and instruction for golfers looking to improve their game. Leadbetter coaches will lead lessons and GDR software provides performance data to fine tune the technical aspects of a swing.
Athletes Untapped is 'a matchmaking platform between parents and coaches,' founder Gene Williams tells SportTechie. The platform allows for finding and booking coaches as well as video feedback. Parents or athletes can record and post videos of training sessions, and coaches can relay feedback on each video, so the athlete knows what to work on in between training sessions.
SportTechie's Tom Friend has more on the CoolMitt device and its patented core cooling technology. CoolMitt delivers cooling water in an enclosed pad that touches the palm’s surface and this sends cool blood back to the heart and then out to overheated muscles. CoolMitt was designed by Stanford University biologists and funded by DARPA, the research and development arm of the U.S. military.
SportTechie's Joe Lemire reports on a new software tool from Sevilla FC called Transfer Tracker. The tool has helped Sevilla identify more than 700 transactions involving homegrown players across 53 leagues and competitions in just the past two years. Now, in partnership with LaLiga Tech, Transfer Tracker is available for licensing to help other clubs track relevant transfers and file the appropriate claims for compensation.
