The Bureau’s severe weather warning says heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash flooding, is forecast around the tropical east coast and inland areas between Cairns and Bowen Sunday.
Six-hourly rainfall totals of 100mm to 150mm are likely with locally heavier falls possible with thunderstorms.
“Locally intense rainfall and flooding will remain a risk during today and into tonight with six-hourly rainfall totals in excess of 250mm possible,” the bureau warns.
“Heavy rainfall may extend southwards towards the Whitsundays and adjacent inland areas on Monday. Depending on the movement of the monsoon trough it is possible that this heavy rainfall may extend a little further south than currently forecast.”

Meteorologist Anthony Cornelius said for Far North Queensland, it was the wettest January day in 10 years yesterday as Cairns AP recorded 274mm in 24 hours.
“ … there’s a lot more rain likely — though the main threats should now contract to south of Cairns as the convergence zone between the northwest winds from the low and onshore, easterly winds pushes southwards,” Mr Cornelius said.
“This could see totals of several hundred millimetres occurring in the next 24-48 hours around the Townsville region and surrounds.
“The heaviest falls will mostly lie around the ranges, and recent modelling suggests this heavy rain could even extend down to as nearly south as Mackay.”
