Overwatch 2 has finally set a firm release date with a new trailer spotlighting yet another hero character for the roster – Junker Queen.
The upcoming Overwatch 2 has set a firm 2022 release date alongside the announcement of a new character, Junker Queen. Junker Queen has been hinted at before within the lore of Overwatch but was never a player character until now. She was first mentioned in the animated short “The Plan,” and then her appearance was revealed in the Wrecking Ball’s origin story trailer.
In Overwatch, Australia has become a near inhospitable area due to the Omnic Crisis. The only ones who call the Outback home now are a group of survivors calling themselves The Junkers. This society formerly had the characters Junkrat and Roadhog among their ranks until they were exiled by the Queen herself for stealing her gold and destroying her summer home. Wrecking Ball, a.k.a Hammond the hamster, had more luck among the Junkers as their champion within their battle area, the Scrapyard. He was rewarded by the Queen for his efforts, though he didn’t stay for long. Junker Queen currently reigns as the leader of the Junkers and their aptly named home, Junkertown.
Revealed during the Xbox and Bethesda event of Summer Game Fest 2022 and later shared to Twitter, Overwatch announced that Overwatch 2 will release on October 4, and confirmed that Junker Queen will be one of several new heroes in the game. The Queen’s role during gameplay will be as a Tank, with her weapons including modified halberds, battle axes, and guns. She is a strong and athletic woman, who wears armor fitting for the Junkers, made up of different pieces of scrap and spikes. In addition, she wears a red gauntlet on her left hand that seems to allow her to levitate her weapons and wield them in a defensive array around her.
One thing fans have been looking forward to with Overwatch 2 is more details on its story. As Junker Queen has connections to multiple characters, her debut will likely mean elaboration on a primarily unexplored part of Overwatch‘s overall narrative. More details on the Junkers’ society, how Junker Queen rules her kingdom, and what sort of technology they have at their disposal will likely be revealed soon. There’s already a lot about her that’s curious, mainly how she fights. She appears to use the gauntlet on her left arm to rotate several halberds around her. How she does this is unknown, but it could possibly be through static electricity or magnetism. This method is likely to help keep enemies from getting too close to her, or else they’ll get shredded.
The Queen of the Junkers will debut along with other new and familiar faces upon the release of Overwatch 2. With her experience in the arena and unique way of using weapons, she will likely be a formidable asset to anyone’s team. While the Overwatch 2 beta saw mixed reception from players, it’s hoped the game and its new heroes will win people over when Overwatch 2 releases on October 4.
