A principal consultant from Frazer-Nash Consultancy, a KBR company, has won the prestigious Bob Campbell Award for his paper, ‘Nuclear propulsion is a game changer. What are the new rules?’.
Nigel Doyle presented his work at the Indo Pacific International Maritime Conference (IMC2022) earlier this year, a Royal Institution of Naval Architects event, where it was named the best presentation and paper from 168 submissions. The award was established to commemorate the legacy of Bob Campbell, who was a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and President of the Australian Division. He chaired the Organising Committee for the Sea Australia Conferences from 2000 to 2004, which evolved into the highly successful Pacific IMCs.
Doyle’s award-winning paper explores the development of a nuclear safety culture in the context of Australia’s imminent expansion of its sovereign capabilities. It also discusses how, when done right, nuclear safety culture can provide “significant benefit to defence personnel, site workers, the general public and to the Commonwealth itself”.
“A new ethos needs to be adopted, including the enforced adoption of an explicit nuclear safety culture across all aspects of its life – from build to operation, and from maintenance to decommissioning,” Doyle writes in his paper’s abstract. “Creating the right culture means that safety and security are regarded as enablers of change rather than compliance processes.”
Doyle said he was honoured to receive the Bob Campbell Award and thanked his team at Frazer-Nash Consultancy for their support. “It is great to have these international forums where shared experiences can contribute to a world-class maritime performance. Receiving an award as well as the opportunity to present my thoughts is the icing on the cake.”
