Fortnite's New Building Changes Are Good (But Come At A Cost) – Screen Rant

By launching without building, Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 2 is making a bold move. However, this is a great opportunity for players to evolve.
Fortnite‘s latest gimmick, removing building in favor of other traversal options, is sure to be controversial, but may be exactly what the game needs. Fortnite has let new mechanics slowly trickle in over its existence, but it has not removed a major function of gameplay before now. With that in mind, chapter 3, Season 2 is going to look unlike any past season of Fortnite.
Through all of the incarnations that Fortnite has seen in its existence, building has been a constant. The ability to use gathered materials to either cross gaps or create cover has been one of the game’s signatures that sets it apart from the field of online multiplayer exclusives. With Chapter 3, Season 2 launching without building, Fortnite is going to be very different, at least for the time being.

Removing Fortnite‘s building at season 2’s start will bring both positives and negatives. Players will have to adapt while they don’t have building, and it will be interesting to see how they learn to deal with this new status quo. How matches look in the coming weeks will be an indicator of how this change has affected the game as a whole.
The new mechanics introduced to Fortnite at this season’s start are sprinting, mantling, and overshield. All of these are simple to explain and perform. Sprinting will let players run more quickly in short bursts, mantling lets players jump and climb onto ledges, and overshield is essentially a regenerating shield that absorbs up to 50 extra damage. These new skills, like Fortnite Season 6’s mechanical and primal weapons, are another example of the innovations Epic continues to apply to the game All of these are explained in a tutorial that activates upon a player’s first game this season, as well as the sliding mechanic that was added last season. Although these mechanics are not complicated, the tutorial helps to introduce them to players and ease them into the new gameplay.
Each of the new mechanics provides its own sort of assistance. Sprinting has obvious advantages, from being able to reach points of interest faster to having an extra burst of speed in order to get out of danger. Mantling can help players navigate the island more easily, hopping over fences and pulling themselves up ledges. It may also be possible to negate fall damage in Fortnite by mantling, at least with exceptionally good timing. As for the overshield, it can give players an extra chance if they get caught by surprise or start a firefight on the wrong foot.

Especially interesting about these mechanics is that, in a Fortnite without building, they force the players to essentially learn new ways to cross the map in order to adapt. A Fortnite match at the beginning of this season will look much different than a match contested at the end of last season. The game has changed very quickly, and it will foster new strategies and tactics. A game that evolves is a healthy game, and this season is going to bring a lot of changes to Fortnite‘s meta.
It cannot be overstated how iconic building is for Fortnite. It is one of the game’s most famous and advertised features, and pro players in Fortnite can build with astonishing speed. With the season opening without building, Fortnite is missing a piece of its identity. It may not be on the same level as a Mario game without jumping, or a Sonic game without running, but it is still a major change that will take some time to get used to.
Not helping matters is the fact that the new abilities added in Chapter 3, Season 2 are for the most part rather generic abilities. Sprinting is a mechanic that is in virtually any shooter, although it is admittedly a surprise that Fortnite went for so long without a sprint function. Likewise, the overshield is quite similar to the regenerating health that appears in several mainstream shooters, most notably the Halo franchise. In swapping out building for these other mechanics, Fortnite‘s gameplay is a little less distinctive than it used to be.

With Fortnite Season 2 releasing more quests and NPCs, the game still has its own identity, and its bright, vibrant colors and large amount of crossover properties reinforce that. However, losing building means that the game is now missing a key component, and one of the main skills that players have built up is currently useless to them. As it stands, adjusting to this new style may be frustrating for some.
Of course, there is no way that building is gone from Fortnite forever. Not only is it a crucial part of the game, but the start of the seasons even has a questline centered on trying to find a way to bring back building. In addition, if the player presses the button to build, they are informed that building is currently unavailable, rather than the button being deactivated completely. Not to mention, a Fortnite leaker revealed a limited no-build mode a few months back. All of these clues combined make it easy to realize that in due time, building will return to Fortnite.
However, this does beg the question of why building would be taken away in the first place. One possible reason is to encourage players to make use of the new mechanics. With players unable to rely on building as they have in the past, they will be required to create new strategies with sprinting, sliding, and mantling. By the time building does return to the game, players will likely be well-versed in the new mechanics. Combining the two playstyles may result in a much more tactical Fortnite experience than the one players knew before.
Fortnite‘s building will return – that much is certain. In the meantime, players will be hard at work learning how to dominate the island all over again with their new skillsets as well as Fortnite Season 2’s new weapon selection. By giving players a reason to practice their new abilities, Fortnite‘s developers have essentially ensured that these skills will become widespread.
Fortnite may be without buiding for now, but that is for the game’s greater good. Fortnite is in a growth period as the game evolves into a new form. Once Chapter 3, Season 2 has come to an end, Fortnite could find itself in a stronger place than it was at the previous season’s end.
