All the characters in MultiVersus are competitively viable, but one from each of the game's five classes rises above the rest. In MultiVersus, unlike many other fighting games, each character is divided into five distinct classes: Bruiser, Assassin, Tank, Support, and Mage. These classes help make new characters simple for players, as they can understand at least the basic strengths and weaknesses of a character just by seeing which class they are in.
MultiVersus is one of the newest platform fighting games to challenge the king of the genre, Super Smash Bros. Unlike other competitors that have been released in recent years, though, MultiVersus is garnering an admirable player base. This is due mostly to the game's approachability, while also having comparable IP recognition to Smash Bros.' portfolio of video game characters. MultiVersus being free-to-play has helped its momentum too, and could help change fighting games for the better.
MultiVersus characters can be divided into the game's five classes, and each class has a character that wins out over the others. MultiVersus is a fairly well-balanced fighting game, meaning that while a few characters rise to the top, a good player can take nearly any character to the top of any tournament or online leaderboard. Despite that, though, these are the characters from each class that are simply the best amongst their peers.
In MultiVersus' most competitive class, Bruiser, Batman comes out on top. The game's most populated class, Bruisers make up 6 members of the game's 17-combatant roster. The competition in this class includes Scooby-Doo's Shaggy, Steven Universe's Garnet, and LeBron James. It's also the future class of the upcoming, but delayed, MultiVersus Season 1 character, Morty.
Batman has a few features that make him the best Bruiser in MultiVersus. First is his Batarang, one of the most annoying projectiles that any character has. This attack causes a status condition called weaken when an opponent is hit by it, making them take more damage from future attacks. Batman can also attach a bomb to the Batarang, which makes it deal even more damage. For his side special, he uses a grappling hook to attach to enemies. While this attack can be easily dodged, it can catch a lot of new players off guard and could be useful for Batman players to rise through the early ranks.
One of the best characters for low-rank players, Adventure Time's Finn the Human is the best character of the three-fighter Assassin class, beating out Game of Thrones' Arya Stark, who could be joined by more Game of Thrones characters in MultiVersus, and Batman's nemesis Harley Quinn. Most of Finn's attacks revolve around a coin system, meaning that some of his best moves depend on making sure he has enough coins to deal a final blow. Despite this, though, the power of Finn's coin-boosted attacks makes having them for certain attacks worth it.
For example, with his earned coins, Finn can purchase buffs for himself and his ally. These include increased speed, a projectile shield, and even BMO, who provides Finn with an incredibly strong chop attack. Finn's most fearful weapon in his arsenal, though, is his spin attack. Similar to the attack of characters like Link in Super Smash Bros., Finn spins across the ground (or upward if he's in the air) and deals damage to enemies caught in the cyclone, an annoyingly powerful move that puts Finn in need of a MultiVersus nerf. With a large number of coins, both the damage and knock back increase, making this an incredible attack for a combo finisher, or just a good way to tack on the damage.
Another DC Comics character at the top of his class, Superman is the best Tank character in MultiVersus. This puts him above fellow DC Comics character Wonder Woman and The Iron Giant, who is unfortunately brought down a lot due to his sheer size. While The Iron Giant is viable in 1-on-1 battles, and Wonder Woman is getting buffed with the next patch, Superman is currently the best Tank in MultiVersus.
One factor of Superman that helps put him above other characters is armor. On nearly all of Superman's standard attacks, he has armor, meaning that while he will take damage, it won't interrupt his current attack. Meanwhile, the rest of his moveset feels better than a standalone Superman game would, giving players control of the rest of Superman's robust selection of powers. Beyond the heat vision and frost breath, though, Superman's greatest strength lies in his flight and strength. Combining these powers, Superman's side and up special attacks grab his opponent and subsequently throws them, which offers opportunities for early damage knockouts on unsuspecting opponents.
In a game centered around duo team play, Support characters have taken the meta by storm, none more than Scooby-Doo's Velma Dinkley, whose powerful projectiles and cooldown-reducing capability have made her a force to be reckoned with. While she's meant for 2v2 play, Velma can dominate one-on-one matches as well. Rising above fellow Supports Steven Universe and the game's original Reindog, Velma should be unlocked in MultiVersus early by new players, and has a few moves that put her far above the competition.
Velma has an unorthodox moveset that helps her stay distant from the competition while dealing massive damage. Her megaphone attack reaches across nearly an entire stage, deals strong damage, and weakens opponents while having a relatively short cooldown. Speaking of cooldowns, all of Velma's can be reduced with her down special. This means her megaphone attack comes out even quicker, and also reduces the cooldown of her word bubbles and toxic concoction, both of which are other powerful tools in her moveset.
Bugs Bunny is not only MultiVersus' best Mage, but could very well be the game's best character. As of the open beta launch, Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry are the only Mages on the MultiVersus roster. With a full ACME arsenal that would be at home in his own Looney Tunes game, Bugs Bunny offers a diverse and impressive moveset that can defeat skilled and novice MultiVersus players alike.
Bugs offers a huge array of skills that deal heavy damage from a distance. His safe is one of his most valuable tools, offering heavy damage falling from the sky, while also being able to hit the safe horizontally to deal damage in all different directions. Other ranged tools include launching ACME rockets, grabbing a random item, and burrowing a hole to move across the stage. Bugs also has a great kit of aerial attacks, with both down air and up air attacks that charge quickly and have a lot of power to dispatch enemies early.
MultiVersus has a diverse and balanced roster, divided into five different classes. However, each of these classes has a character that reigns supreme, like Velma in Support and Superman among Tanks, that are the best character picks in MultiVersus. These picks within classes are sure to change when new characters are added to MultiVersus, but for now, these are the best characters from each of the game's five classes.
