There’s nothing better than a piping hot bowl of soup with barbecued meat on a cool night. And if you enjoy Korean food, you know that they’re all about that.
This hidden gem tucked away in an unassuming row of shops in Ara Damansara is bound to delight Korean fans with their authentic fare that is perfect for sharing.
MiMi Korean Restaurant’s menu is mostly Korean-style soups and barbecued meats, but they also have a smaller selection of ala carte dishes such as bibimbap and japchae.
The most popular (and value-for-money) options were their set dinners, so we tried the fan favourite Soy Sauce Marinade Pork Set that comes with barbecued meat, Korean pancake, cheese, fried cabbage, and your choice of soup.
The meat comes cooked to perfection so you can dig in right away, and you’ll definitely want to do so. The meat is succulent and beautifully seasoned for a perfect, juicy bite. The soy sauce marinade wasn’t too salty, but had enough umami to really hit the right spot.
To eat the dish the traditional ssam way, the meat should be wrapped with lettuce and other toppings. Take a piece of the meat and dip it into the melted cheese. Then, wrap it with fresh lettuce. Add in chunky garlic pieces and chopped chili. Top it all off with a dash of ssamjang and salt.
Each bite is a wonderful burst of hot juicy meat, the salty-sweetness of the melted mozzarella cheese, and the crisp freshness of the lettuce.
The kimchi soup tastes fantastically homemade with rich flavours that tickle the appetite. However, the kimchi served here (soup or as a side dish banchan) is on the spicier side, so those that can’t tolerate the heat might want to choose the non-spicy soups instead.
Speaking of banchan, be prepared for a delectable and refillable spread of traditional Korean side-dishes like pickled cucumber, julienned potatoes and carrots, spicy kimchi, macaroni, and more. Each side-dish is so excellent, the dishes may be empty before your mains arrive.
Although the pancake may seem like the plainest dish on the table, it is far from being plain in taste. It’s simple, but certainly impressive with its and bright flavours that round out your meal.
This is one of those places where you want to hoard any knowledge of its existence. Even though it’s hidden away in a small shoplot, the restaurant is full house and often has a waiting line (which thankfully clears relatively fast).
Everything on the menu is excellent and will definitely satisfy any cravings you have for Korean food (and ruin you completely for mediocre Korean food). The portions are also pretty large, so bring an appetite or friends to share the food.
The set menus are meant for 2-3 pax, but it can easily feed more if you order from the ala carte menu or just top up a little bit of extra for optional add-ons such as ramen noodles or soup refills. Frankly, you could even just get an extra bowl of rice and go nuts on the refillable banchan.
Pair your meal with popular Korean drinks, alcoholic or not, and you will feel like the star of your own K-drama!
The prices here are certainly worth it for the quality of food you get, especially when you can split the bill with the table. The set menu starts at RM90++, but it’s actually one of the more afforable options as the ala carte menu alone starts at RM25++.
All in all, MiMi Korean Restaurant is a must-try for those who really love Korean food, but it’s also a worthwhile restaurant for those who just want good and deeply satisfying food.
